They say that results from intensive quality sampling and testing confirm that restored tap water supplies are now safe to drink provided it is boiled before use.
When will the tap water be safe to drink without being boiled?
Severn Trent is currently taking large numbers of samples throughout the mains system, and will continue to do so for the next week. At this early stage of the process, we cannot say when we expect water supplies to be safe to drink without boiling.
What happens if I or my family have drunk unboiled tap water?
Experience from previous flooding and sewage contamination has shown any risk to health is small. If it does cause any health effects, this is likely to be a mild gastrointestinal infection – a tummy upset. If a tummy upset occurs, you should seek medical advice.
What should I do about preparing food?
Boil and cool water before rinsing salads, fruit or vegetables to be eaten uncooked or any foods which do not receive thorough cooking.
Can I brush my teeth using tap water?
No. The tap water must be boiled and allowed to cool first.
Can I wash or shower with tap water?
Can I make up baby feed with the water?
No. The tap water will need to be boiled. After allowing to cool in clean covered container. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on making up the feed.
Can I use the water to bathe my infant?
Use boiled water that has been cooled to bathe your infant. A safe alternative to bathing is to use baby wipes for hand cleansing and washing infants.
Can I use tap water to sterilise my baby’s feeding bottle?
No. It must be boiled and allowed to cool first: then sterilise in the normal way.
Can I cook with the tap water?
Use boiled tap water that has been cooled for washing salad and items that are to be eaten prior to cooking. If the water is to be boiled as part of the cooking process then you can use it straight from the tap
Can I make ice?
No, used boiled and cooled tap water for making ice
Can I use my water filter?
Yes. But the tap water that has been filtered must still be boiled before use. You will need to replace the filter once the advice to boil has been lifted.
Are drinking fountains in public places affected?
All tap water needs to be boiled before drinking; water from a drinking water fountain has not been boiled.
